NEW MINIMUM WAGE RATES FOR HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY 2017-2018
As from 1 July 2017, the new minimum wage rates for the hospitality industry sector are increased to the following:
Employers with 10 or less employees:
Monthly rate: R 3193.12
Weekly rate: R 736.92
Hourly rate: R 16.36
Employers with more than 10 employees:
Monthly rate: R 3559.10
Weekly rate: R 821.34
Hourly rate: R 18.25
These increases (7.9 %) are only on minimum wage rates. Higher earners therefore do not necessarily have to receive the same percentage increase.
The increase in minimum wage rates do not apply in areas that are governed by bargaining council agreements, for example the Bargaining Council for the Restaurant, Catering & Allied Trades that applies in Johannesburg and certain surrounding areas, and the Bargaining Council for the Tearoom, Restaurant & Catering Trade in Pretoria.
